BOYACA

BOYACA IN THE LAND OF LIBERTY

Boyacá is centrally located within Colombia, almost entirely within the mountains of the Eastern CordilleraBoyacá is known as “The Land of Freedom” because this region was the battleground for numerous confrontations between the royalist and patriot armies led by Simón Bolívar during 19th century and led to Colombia’s independence from Spain.

The word Boyacá derived from the Chibcha word “Bojacá” which means “Near the cacique”, or “Region of the royal mantle”, the territory of present-day Boyaca was during the Pre-Columbian time the domain of the Muisca indigenous peoples.

Boyacá is a land of majestic mountains and breathtaking vistas. While pedaling throughout this region one could only imagine that these mountains were made to enjoy riding on a bicycle. Incredible ascents with gratifying achievements, quaint little towns on the countryside with a local culture that maintain traditions that come all the way back from colonial times. The state of Boyacá lies on the eastern range of the Andes. The air we breathe here carries cycling, history and culture all over this region. Taking on a journey across these mountains means going over the paths of the colonial conquerers and visiting the battlefield grounds and other sites that took part in the Colombian independence. Pedaling through villages frozen in time, with original and well-preserved examples of its colonial architecture; here you will have a taste of the region’s gastronomy and pedal on the very same mountains as the greatest and renowned riders born in this lands.
